Indian Railways Suffered Loss of Rs 259.44 cr Due To Agnipath Protests: Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi: Indian Railways suffered a loss of Rs 259.44 crores due to damage and destruction of its assets due to Agnipath protests across the country, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the parliament on Friday.
As many as 2132 trains were canceled between June 15 and June 23, the Minister further informed parliament in a written reply.
"During the period 14.06.2022 to 30.06.2022, a total refund of approximately Rs 102.96 crore was granted on account of cancellation of trains and a loss of Rs 259.44 crore due to damage/destruction of railway assets in agitations against Agnipath scheme was incurred,'' he said.
''All the affected train services canceled on account of the Agnipath scheme have been restored," he added.
Recently, the government launched the 'Agnipath Yojana' for recruitment in the Indian Army which sparked outrage across the country. The opposition strongly opposed this plan and some students along with the activists of political parties across the country took to the streets.
Trains were stopped and set on fire at several places following which government property was also damaged and at the same time railways have incurred a loss of Rs 259.44 crore.
